Landslide Prevention Completed at 18 Sites in Medeu District, Almaty

Landslide prevention work has been completed at 18 sites in the Medeu District of Almaty. Ongoing efforts in the district focus on preventing landslides and minimizing emergency risks in the foothill areas of the city. Medeu District Akim Yerkebulan Orazalin shared this update during a briefing by the Regional Communications Service of Almaty.

According to Orazalin, necessary engineering measures have been determined for each landslide-prone area in collaboration with relevant governmental bodies and expert organizations.

"There are 48 identified landslide-prone sites in the district. The district akimat is directly managing work at 12 sites, with 4 sites still under progress," noted Yerkebulan Orazalin.

Additionally, at eight sites, property owners are conducting work in accordance with assessments by expert organizations.

Depending on the specific characteristics of each area, the measures include slope stabilization and the construction of retaining structures, alongside other engineering solutions aimed at ground stabilization.

As of today, comprehensive landslide prevention measures have been completed at 18 sites. The remaining 30 sites are under ongoing supervision, reported Yerkebulan Orazalin.

He added that by 2024, the number of potentially hazardous sites in the Medeu District was expected to reach 87. The top priority remains disaster prevention, with potentially dangerous locations being addressed proactively before any critical situations arise.

Almaty will start connecting residential buildings to central heating on October 9, as temperatures drop. Social institutions will be prioritized first.

Almaty to Begin Connecting Residential Buildings to Central Heating on October 9

Starting October 9, Almaty will begin connecting residential buildings to the central heating system. This decision was made due to a sharp drop in air temperature, following the directive of the city akim, Darkhan Satybaldy.

Initially, heating will be supplied to social institutions—kindergartens, schools, and medical facilities. This was announced by the Almaty Department of Energy and Water Supply.

The connection of residential buildings is scheduled to begin on October 10. After the heating is supplied to the building's entrance, specialists from the housing cooperatives and homeowners' associations will adjust the internal systems—bleeding air from radiators and risers, adjusting pressure, and ensuring even heating of the apartments.

Almaty Heating Networks LLC has completed preparations for the winter season. To quickly respond to potential malfunctions, an emergency supply of materials and equipment has been established. During the 2026–2027 heating season, 16 emergency and repair teams will be on duty, comprising a total of 220 specialists and 56 units of equipment.
