Key Causes of Fires in Astana Unveiled

Since the beginning of 2023, Astana has reported 529 fire incidents, with 225 occurring in residential areas, accounting for 42.5% of the total. Additionally, around 135 fires were noted in motor vehicles, and 125 in controlled facilities, according to the Department of Emergency Situations of Astana.

The primary causes of the fires have been identified as follows:

• Violations in fireplace safety requirements, including defective stoves and untimely cleaning of chimneys;
• Careless and negligent attitudes toward fire safety measures by citizens;
• Improper use of electrical appliances and low-quality heaters;
• Worn electrical wiring and unauthorized connections;
• Leaving children unsupervised and children playing with fire;
• Careless handling of fire by individuals under the influence of alcohol.

According to a department spokesperson, there are 983 families in Astana classified as socially vulnerable. Preventive inspections are conducted in collaboration with local executive bodies, police, and volunteers. During these exercises, 157 private homes were examined, and fire safety requirements and regulations were explained to 700 citizens. Approximately 38 violations were identified, with 15.8% related to heating systems and 84.2% to electrical networks. Thirty violations were corrected on site.

Twelve carbon monoxide detectors have been installed in the homes of citizens from socially vulnerable groups. Over the past four years, more than 3,000 such detectors have been installed.

With the sharp drop in temperature in Astana, the Department of Emergency Situations urges citizens to adhere to fire safety measures when heating their premises:

• Check the condition of stoves, electrical and gas heaters;
• Use only functional heating devices;
• Prevent equipment from overheating and do not leave electrical appliances unattended;
• Regularly clean chimneys from soot;
• Avoid using makeshift or defective heating devices;
• In case of fire, report immediately to 101 or 112;
• Do not leave children unsupervised.
