Kazakh Ministry of Energy Implements AI Technologies for Monitoring Power Facilities

As part of the Year of Digitalization in Kazakhstan, the integration of modern digital solutions in the energy sector continues. The Ministry of Energy is placing great emphasis on digital transformation, aimed at enhancing the reliability of energy infrastructure, improving the efficiency of production processes, and ensuring personnel safety.

One of these initiatives involves the application of artificial intelligence technologies and drones for monitoring energy infrastructure, a project spearheaded by Samruk-Energo JSC.

These new digital solutions enable the automation of inspections for power lines, transformers, smokestacks, coal depots, and hydraulic structures. The use of artificial intelligence ensures automatic analysis of the collected data, identification of potential defects at an early stage, and the development of recommendations for their rectification.

Specifically, the use of drones for inspecting power lines and energy equipment reduces inspection times by 5 to 10 times. Inspections of smokestacks, which used to take several days, now take around two hours, eliminating the need for personnel to perform high-altitude work.

Additionally, aerial monitoring technologies are utilized for overseeing coal stockpiles. Three-dimensional models of the sites are created based on aerial photography, with artificial intelligence automatically calculating volumes with up to 99% accuracy. The data processing time is reduced from several days to 20 minutes.

Digital tools are also applied to the monitoring of hydraulic structures. Analyzing aerial photography and thermographic data enables timely detection of structural integrity violations, allowing for preventive measures to be taken to avoid technological risks.

The implementation of artificial intelligence and digital monitoring technologies contributes to enhancing the reliability of energy infrastructure, the efficiency of production processes, and the level of industrial safety, in line with the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan's agenda for the digital transformation of the sector.
