Share of Renewable Energy in Kazakhstan's Energy Balance Quadruples Over Six Years

Kazakhstan is making consistent strides in developing its renewable energy sector. In the past six years, the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources in the country's energy balance has quadrupled, rising from 2% to 8%.

This growth has been driven by systematic government policy measures, auctions for renewable energy projects, and investment in new generating capacities.

Currently, the country boasts 172 renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of over 3.8 GW. This includes 71 wind farms, 54 solar power plants, 44 hydroelectric power stations, and three biogas plants.

In 2025, renewable energy facilities produced 8.6 billion kWh of electricity. That year, nine new facilities were commissioned with a total capacity exceeding 500 MW.

The industry continues its development in 2026 with plans to launch an additional 10 renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of 245 MW — four wind, five solar, and one hydroelectric plant. Electricity generation from renewable sources is expected to reach 8.8 billion kWh by the end of the year.

In the near future, around 100 projects with a combined capacity of 3.6 GW are planned. Additionally, major renewable energy projects totaling another 4 GW are under consideration.

Significant international investors, including TotalEnergies, China Power, Masdar, and China Energy, are already involved in the sector. Their participation facilitates access to cutting-edge technologies and investments while expanding new generating capacities. This will increase the share of clean energy in the country's energy balance, enhance the resilience of the energy system, and strengthen energy security.
