Preparations for the First LRT Line in Almaty Include Relocation of 375 Utility Lines

Preparation for constructing the first LRT line in Almaty is underway, aiming for a launch by the end of 2027.

Current work is concentrated on B. Momyshuly and Tole Bi streets, focusing on route preparation and the relocation of utilities that intersect the construction zone.

The project plans to relocate a total of 375 utility lines, including heating systems, communications, water supply and sewage, stormwater drainage, gas, and electricity.

On B. Momyshuly Street, 39 utility lines are scheduled for relocation, with 4 already completed in the future depot area. On Tole Bi Street, 269 lines are to be relocated, with 34 completed so far. On Abai Khan Avenue, 67 utility lines will be relocated.

Additionally, old tram tracks have been dismantled, and earthworks conducted within the two center lanes. A key strategy is maintaining traffic flow in the outer lanes. When necessary, traffic is redirected to a single lane in the opposite direction for utility relocation. Such traffic restrictions typically last no more than one to two days.

Relocating utility lines is a vital step in preparing the LRT route. As sections become clear, construction will begin on line structures, sleeper, and rail laying, among other tasks.

Construction and installation work will continue through the winter. Necessary technological measures will be in place for ground protection, winter concreting, structure insulation, and concrete curing during freezing temperatures.

According to project plans, the first section of the LRT line starts at the depot located in the industrial zone of Alatau district near Monke Bi and B. Momyshuly streets. The route follows B. Momyshuly Street to Tole Bi Street, then east on Tole Bi to Abai Khan Avenue and further to the Almaty-2 railway station. The final station will be the Raiymbek Batyr transport interchange hub.

The first phase of the LRT line will be entirely ground-level — no overpasses are planned in this project. Existing bridge structures will be reinforced. Once operational, the two center lanes on Bauyrzhan Momyshuly and Tole Bi streets will be reserved for trains only, separated by curbstones. This dedicated lane will prioritize public transport, enhancing speed and regularity while reducing traffic collision risks.

The LRT trains will have a maximum technical speed of 65–70 km/h. However, given an average stop distance of 700 meters, the average speed will be around 30–35 km/h, ensuring comfortable, safe, and regular public transit along the dedicated line.

The planned launch for the line is late 2027, though timelines may adjust based on the production and delivery of the necessary rolling stock.
