Creative Cluster Construction Begins at Former Tram Depot Site in Almaty

Construction has commenced on a creative cluster at the site of the former tram depot in Almaty. According to the city's mayor's office, urban planning decisions have been made, and the implementation of this large-scale project has begun.

The site, located at the intersection of Gogol and Baitursynov streets, is set to host a creative cluster with a total area of approximately 32,000 square meters. The project aims to establish a comprehensive infrastructure for the development of creative industries.

The cluster will feature:

  • a multifunctional concert hall;
  • public halls and event spaces;
  • studios and workshops for creative industry professionals;
  • showrooms for Kazakhstani designers;
  • a modern art gallery;
  • an atrium for city events;
  • office spaces for creative entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the project encompasses a landscaped area with an amphitheater, a summer stage, a park zone, and a children's play infrastructure, creating an open and accessible public space.

“This is not about isolated improvements but rather a shift in the functional role of the area, directed towards the development of human capital and the creative economy. The long period of non-use of this site was due to the complexity of preparing and approving a project of this scale, which required going through all stages of the urban planning and expert cycle. The project has been approved by the Urban Planning Council and has received positive feedback from the state examination. Thus, at the moment, not only the concept has been formed, but also the project documentation has been approved. The demolition of old structures has been completed, and the active construction phase has begun,” noted the mayor's office.

Thus, the former tram depot site will become a significant urban infrastructure development project, transforming into a contemporary creative cluster integrated into the city's economy and open to residents.

Moreover, the mayor's office reiterated that the city is not abandoning trams. Construction of the first LRT (light rail transit) line, or modern tram, has already begun. The line will run along Abai Khan Avenue, Tole Bi Street westward, and north along Momyshuly Street. The new tram depot will be constructed in the Industrial Zone in the Alatau District.
