Yerzhan Ertayev Unveils Plans for New Energy Capacities at Powerexpo Almaty 2026

On October 21–22, 2026, the international energy forum Powerexpo Almaty 2026 is taking place in Almaty. The event addresses the development of Kazakhstan's energy infrastructure, considering the increasing demand for electricity, modernization of existing capacities, construction of new energy sources, and expansion of electrical grids.

Deputy Minister of Energy Yerzhan Ertayev outlined the main directions for the development of the electric power industry and plans for introducing new generating capacities.

Currently, Kazakhstan's energy system comprises 254 energy sources, including 172 renewable energy facilities. By the end of 2025, electricity production reached a historical maximum of 123.1 billion kWh. In 2026, production is expected to increase to 126.5 billion kWh.

The Ministry of Energy is implementing the Energy Sector Development Plan up to 2035, which includes the introduction of about 26.3 GW of new and upgraded capacities. Efforts are underway to create legal and economic mechanisms for the operation of energy storage systems, which will enhance the flexibility of the energy system and expand the integration capabilities of renewable energy sources.

Starting from 2027, the introduction of new capacities will cover the economy's electricity needs, leading to a surplus. By the end of 2029, approximately 13.3 GW of new capacities are planned to be introduced, which will help meet the electricity needs of the economy and population and establish a reserve of generating capacities.

Special attention is being paid to the implementation of the National Project 'Development of Coal Generation,' which involves the introduction and renewal of capacities totaling 7.8 GW. This project plans the construction of eight new facilities with a total capacity of 5.3 GW and the modernization, expansion, and technical re-equipment of eleven existing energy sources with a capacity of 2.5 GW.
