New Wastewater Treatment Plant Construction Begins in Aktobe

Construction of new wastewater treatment facilities has commenced in Aktobe.

The new facility will replace the current station, which has been in operation for 45 years. The project aims to upgrade the deteriorating sewage infrastructure, expand the centralized sewer coverage to more residents, and provide the necessary capacity for the city's growth.

Asylum of Aktobe region, Askhat Shakharov, visited the construction site of the new facility, where he reviewed the project and technological solutions planned for the development.

The existing wastewater treatment facilities were commissioned in 1981 and are currently about 70% worn out. The average daily volume of wastewater handled is between 70,000 and 80,000 cubic meters, which can rise to 95,000 cubic meters during flood periods. Currently, centralized sewerage serves approximately 62% of Aktobe's population.

The new plant is designed to treat 100,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, with a peak capacity of up to 130,000 cubic meters. The construction is scheduled for completion by May 2028 and the total project cost is around 43 billion tenge.

According to the CEO of "Aqtobe su-energy group" JSC, Nagymzhan Aldiyarov, the new facilities will feature a four-tier purification system. The process will include mechanical and biological treatment, UV disinfection, and sludge processing to produce biogas. The sludge will be dried and processed into pellets, while the biogas will be used for electricity generation.

Construction has officially started, with specialists from the contracting organization on site. As the work progresses, the workforce is expected to increase to 350 people.

Once the new plant is operational, the treated water may be used for fisheries or discharged into a water body, in adherence to established environmental standards and necessary project documentation.

The existing treatment facilities will continue operating until the new station is launched. Post-launch, an assessment will determine the condition and necessity for reconstruction of the current facility.

The implementation of this project will renew a crucial component of the city's sewage system, enhance wastewater treatment quality, and offer additional development opportunities for Aktobe.
