Equipment Wear at Tekeli CHP-2 Halved Following Reconstruction
Equipment wear at Tekeli CHP-2 in Zhetisu region reduced to 34.2% following reconstruction, enhancing energy security and capacity.
The wear and tear of equipment at Tekeli CHP-2, located in the Zhetisu region, has been halved following reconstruction efforts. The extensive modernization of the Tekeli energy complex, which is the principal electricity source for Tekeli and the surrounding area, has decreased the equipment wear level from 67% to 34.2%.
The work involved refurbishing the existing CHP-2 plant, initially constructed in 1959. Over the years, the wear had reached critical levels, posing risks of accidents and unplanned shutdowns. The increased load on CHP-2, spurred by residential construction growth and the emergence of new industrial enterprises, led to electricity shortages during peak hours.
As part of a comprehensive solution to the issue, the decision was made to build a combined cycle gas turbine on the premises of the Tekeli energy complex to complement the existing coal-fired CHP-2. Both facilities will operate concurrently. By 2025, as part of the first two phases of expansion and reconstruction, three gas turbine units with a total capacity of 36 MW are scheduled to be commissioned.
The completion of the modernization is crucial for the region: the introduction of the combined cycle unit will increase the installed electrical capacity from the current 24 MW to 77 MW and the thermal capacity from 42 to 90 Gcal/hour. The updated equipment will also reduce the risk of outages and enhance the energy security of the Zhetisu region. Having its own power source will minimize dependency on external resource supplies and reduce electricity transfer through the North-South network.
The project is being executed under investment agreements with the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with a total cost of 46.8321 billion tenge. The final stage of modernization and expansion of the Tekeli energy complex is scheduled for completion in July 2026.
