Two major energy projects are being implemented in Ust-Kamenogorsk. On August 12, 2026, construction began on a new power unit at the existing Ust-Kamenogorsk combined heat and power plant (CHP), alongside an ongoing project for a new CHP station. Both projects aim to increase the city's thermal and electrical capacity in line with its future development.

The project at the existing CHP involves the construction of a new power unit, which includes a boiler unit No. 16 with a capacity of 400 tons of steam per hour and a turbine No. 13 with an electrical capacity of 100 MW.

Simultaneously, a new CHP project is underway in Ust-Kamenogorsk, scheduled for 2025-2029. The plant will have an installed electrical capacity of 405 MW and a thermal capacity of 1000 Gcal/h. The new CHP will provide additional capacity for the growing city, with plans to install four energy boilers, three steam turbines, and three turbogenerators.

"For Ust-Kamenogorsk, this is yet another significant project that will create new capacities taking into account the city's growth and its needs for heat and electricity. Even at the construction stage, we are incorporating modern ecological solutions," noted Erlan Akkengenov, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The project has already moved to the practical phase. Land plots for the construction of the CHP and ash dump have been formalized, and key technical solutions have been approved. Geological and geodetic work, site preparation, and temporary infrastructure construction are underway. It is planned to engage up to 2,500 people and more than 200 pieces of special equipment in the active phase of construction.

Particular attention is being paid to environmental requirements. The new CHP will use "clean coal" technology with comprehensive flue gas cleaning. This system will reduce emissions of nitrogen and sulfur oxides, as well as particulates. This is particularly important for Ust-Kamenogorsk, so modern environmental solutions are being incorporated from the construction stage.

Both projects consider the city's prospective development and increasing demand for energy capacity. The expansion of the existing CHP will reduce the thermal capacity deficit, and the construction of the new station will create an additional foundation for Ust-Kamenogorsk's further development.
