Almaty Introduces GREEN UP Environmental Project Under 'Taza Kazakhstan' Program

In Almaty, the GREEN UP environmental project has been launched as part of the nationwide 'Taza Kazakhstan' program. The initiative was presented on August 31 at City School No. 224. The project is being implemented with the participation of ECO Network and the support of Almaty's Department of Environment and Eco Almaty.

GREEN UP aims to instill eco-friendly habits in students and their families, such as waste segregation, responsible consumption, and prudent use of natural resources.

The first pilot is being conducted in the Bostandyk district. As part of the Green APP Almaty program, the goal is to unite kindergartens, schools, and colleges within the district. The initiative is based at Eco-Hubs located at 44 Markova Street and Satbayev University, alongside the digital platform econetwork.me.

Participants can collect recyclables at home and take them to the Eco-Hubs. Results will be tracked through a mobile app and reflected in the overall ranking of educational institutions. Points can also be earned by participating in environmental campaigns and volunteer events.

Raiza Akhmetova, the principal of School No. 224, emphasized the importance of developing ecological habits from a young age.

“Our goal is to cultivate an ecological culture among students and make responsible environmental behavior a daily habit. It's important that children not only understand the need to protect nature but also recognize that their actions can make a tangible impact on its preservation,” said Raiza Akhmetova.

During the presentation, students were shown how to properly sort waste and which materials are accepted for recycling. They also brought paper and plastic waste for recycling.

Project author Yevgeny Mukhamedzhanov stressed that environmental habits are most effectively developed through practice and family involvement.

“Ecological culture starts with simple actions performed daily. When a child sorts waste at home and brings it for recycling, the entire family gradually becomes engaged. Our task is to make eco-friendly behavior understandable, accessible, and appealing,” commented Yevgeny Mukhamedzhanov.

Moving forward, participants will be able to create environmental clubs, propose their own initiatives, and take part in city conservation activities. Volunteer programs are also available for schoolchildren, college students, parents, and educational institution staff.

The project features a motivation system: participants and educational institutions can earn rewards for their activity and collection of specific types of recyclables. There are plans to expand the model to other districts of Almaty.

GREEN UP combines environmental education, digital tools, and practical actions to make responsible waste management a part of everyday life.
