Interim Results of LEZ Pilot Project Announced in Almaty
Interim results of Almaty's LEZ pilot project show insights on vehicle emissions and air quality improvement efforts.

In Almaty, the ongoing pilot project to implement a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is aimed at reducing harmful emissions from vehicles and improving air quality. The interim monitoring results for September provide insights into vehicle conditions and the effectiveness of the measures taken.
During this period, 6,833 vehicles were inspected at control points. Of these, 922 vehicles (13.5%) were found to exceed the established standards for harmful emissions.
After adjustments to the fuel system, 561 vehicles successfully passed repeat tests. This confirms that timely maintenance and proper vehicle tuning can help reduce emission levels.
The pilot project allows for data collection on vehicle conditions, assessing the scale of the problem, and forming further approaches to reduce harmful emissions.
According to experts, vehicles account for about 60% of air pollution in Almaty. Thus, the work on emissions monitoring and increasing the environmental responsibility of vehicle owners remains a key area in improving urban environmental quality.
At this stage, the project continues to operate in a pilot mode. The data collected will be used for further analysis and to develop solutions. The introduction of entry restrictions, fines, or charges for passage is not anticipated within the project. The pilot will continue until the end of the current year.
