New Petrochemical Facilities to Strengthen Kazakhstan's Processing Industry Base
New investment projects in Kazakhstan's petrochemical sector aim to boost production and enhance processing capabilities by 2025.

The International Exhibition of Plastics and Chemical Industry, Plastex Qazaqstan, took place in Almaty, bringing together industry representatives to showcase innovative solutions, equipment, raw materials, and technologies in the field of plastics and chemical industry.
The event was attended by Temirlan Urkumbaev, Director of the Department of Petrochemicals and Technical Regulation of the Ministry of Energy, who presented the key achievements in the development of the country's petrochemical industry, the progress of investment projects, and the prospects for the sector's further growth.
By the end of 2025, Kazakhstan's production of petrochemical products is expected to reach 619 thousand tons, a 73% increase from the 358 thousand tons produced in 2023. The majority of this production comprises polypropylene. The country also produces paraxylene, lubricants, methyl tert-butyl ether, and benzene.
A significant factor in the sector's continued growth is the implementation of major investment projects. Currently, there are efforts in Kazakhstan to establish production facilities for polyethylene, urea, butadiene, and alkylate.
Particular attention is given to the construction of an integrated gas chemical complex for polyethylene production in the Atyrau region, with a capacity of 1.25 million tons per year. In parallel, a gas separation complex project is underway to supply the polyethylene production with the necessary raw materials.

Among the priority areas, the development of butadiene production in the Atyrau region, with a capacity of up to 339 thousand tons per year, and alkylate production in the Pavlodar region, with a capacity of up to 100 thousand tons per year, were highlighted. These projects aim to expand the range of the country's petrochemical products and increase the in-country processing depth of hydrocarbon resources.
The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with stakeholders, has developed a draft "Petrochemicals Industry Law," which has been submitted to the Kurultai for consideration. This law includes measures for state support of the industry, the development of necessary infrastructure, the supply of raw materials and qualified personnel, as well as stimulating demand for domestic petrochemical products.
