Kazakhstan Plans to Introduce 13.3 GW of New Generating Capacity by 2029

Kazakhstan intends to introduce 13.3 GW of new generating capacity by 2029. This was announced at a meeting of the Committee on Economic Policy, Industry, and Energy of the Kurultai.

Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov participated in the event and presented a report on the current state of the electricity sector and plans for introducing new capacities.

"To strengthen energy security and meet the growing demands of the economy, 13.3 GW of new generating capacity is planned to be introduced in Kazakhstan by the end of 2029. Of this, base generation will account for 7.4 GW. The implementation of the planned projects will cover the forecasted demand of the population and the economy for electricity, provide energy for prospective AI infrastructure and large data centers, as well as form a 20% excess of generating capacity," said Yerlan Akkenzhenov.

According to him, it is expected that by 2027, the new generating capacities will result in an electricity surplus of 1.3 billion kWh.

Additionally, in accordance with the instructions of the Head of State, work is being conducted to update the country's Energy Balance until 2035.

Particular attention is given to the development of renewable energy sources. Currently, the share of renewable energy in the total electricity production has reached 8.5%. One of the priority areas is the development of solar energy, for which a pool of major solar power plant projects with a capacity of 900 MW has been formed.

Overall, by the end of 2035, at least 8.4 GW of new renewable energy capacities are planned to be introduced, including approximately 1.8 GW of solar generation.

Another strategic initiative is the national project "Development of Coal Generation," which involves introducing and updating about 7.8 GW of capacities, including the construction of eight new stations and the modernization of 11 existing power sources.

Thus, the implementation of these measures will ensure the advanced development of generating capacities, diversify the energy balance, modernize infrastructure, and lay a solid foundation for the long-term electricity supply of the country.
