Kazakhstan to Introduce 4 GW of Traditional Generation by 2028-2029
Kazakhstan plans to add 4 GW of traditional generation capacity by 2028-2029 to meet rising electricity demand, alongside renewable energy growth.

The Ministry of Energy has developed a long-term plan for the development of electric power in Kazakhstan, aiming for a phased introduction of new generation capacities in 2028-2029. This plan focuses on increasing the available capacity of the energy system, meeting the growing demand for electricity, and fostering the growth of both traditional generation and renewable energy sources.
In 2028, Kazakhstan is set to introduce 2 GW of traditional generation. Projects under this plan include the construction of combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) in Taraz, Atyrau, and Aktobe, the third unit of the Ekibastuz GRES-2, a boiler and turbine unit at Karaganda Energy Center, a boiler and turbine unit at Kazakhmys Energy's BTES, a boiler and turbine unit at Kazakhmys Energy's ZTES, as well as the expansion and modernization of the Aksu GRES power unit.
In 2029, the country plans to introduce 2.3 GW of traditional generation. Projects listed include the construction of a turbine and boiler unit at the Ust-Kamenogorsk CHPP, the introduction of five gas turbine units (GTU) at the Atyrau CHPP, the construction of two GTUs by Batys Power LLP, and the commissioning of CHPPs in Kokshetau, Semey, and Ust-Kamenogorsk, as well as the first unit of Ekibastuz GRES-3.
