Masdar Continues Development of 1 GW Wind Power Project in Zhambyl Region
Masdar progresses on a 1 GW wind power project in Zhambyl Region, enhancing Kazakhstan's renewable energy sector and energy security.
The Minister of Energy, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, held a meeting with Abdullah Zayed, Deputy Chairman for Business Development and Projects at Masdar, and the UAE Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Mohamed Saeed Mohamed Al-Ariqi.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the progress of their joint wind power plant project, featuring a 1 GW capacity and energy storage system, in the Zhambyl Region. They also explored future cooperation prospects in renewable energy.
This project is part of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Masdar, with total investments estimated at approximately 1.4 billion USD. On June 29, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in the Zhambyl Region, marking the official start of the project's construction phase.
The project involves building a 1,000 MW wind power plant with a 300 MW storage system, offering a capacity of 600 MWh. Its goal is to increase renewable energy generation and enhance energy security in Kazakhstan's southern regions.
The importance of the energy storage system was highlighted, as it will allow for more flexible and sustainable electricity production from renewable sources, accommodating changes in weather and consumption patterns.
The full commissioning of the 1 GW wind power plant is scheduled for the third quarter of 2029.
Yerlan Akkenzhenov emphasized Kazakhstan’s interest in further expanding partnerships with international investors and technology partners in renewable energy.
"The partnership with Masdar advances renewable energy and supports Kazakhstan's path to carbon neutrality. Implementing this project is crucial for strengthening regional energy security, attracting modern technologies, and creating new development opportunities for the energy infrastructure," noted the Minister of Energy.
At the meeting's conclusion, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to constructive collaboration and timely implementation of all project activities.
