East Kazakhstan Region Plans 'Green' Hydrogen and Ammonia Production Project

Kazakhstan is set to embark on a project aimed at producing 'green' hydrogen and ammonia. Amidst the state visit of the President of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Korea, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Akimat of East Kazakhstan Region, and YPP Corporation as part of the 'Green Energy Complex' project in East Kazakhstan Region.

The document focuses on fostering cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy and renewable energy sources, encompassing analytical and research work, experience and expert knowledge exchange, as well as collaborative exploration of promising areas of interaction.

As part of one of the cooperation directions outlined in the memorandum, there is a focus on developing an energy complex incorporating renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of approximately 1 GW. This complex aims to produce up to 55,000 tons of 'green' hydrogen or up to 310,000 tons of 'green' ammonia annually. Should the project prove feasible, its preliminary cost is estimated at around 2 billion US dollars.

The signing of the document reflects the parties' intention to continue Kazakhstan-Korea collaboration in the renewable and hydrogen energy sectors and create conditions for further joint exploration of promising projects and initiatives in this field.

'Green' hydrogen is used in metallurgy, chemical industry, energy, and transport as a low-carbon fuel and raw material. 'Green' ammonia is mainly used for fertilizer production, in the chemical industry, and is also considered a low-carbon energy carrier for international shipments.
