24 Projects in Turkibiskiy District of Almaty Set to Emerge from Residents' Proposals

In Almaty's Turkibiskiy district, a significant push is underway to renovate housing, refresh courtyards, overhaul the drainage system, and revitalize public spaces. Damir Akezhanov, the district mayor, shared insights on completed projects and future plans leading up to the end of 2026 at a press conference held by Almaty's Regional Communication Service.

With 582 deteriorating homes, Turkibiskiy district holds half of Almaty's outdated housing stock. Currently, renovation is progressing across seven sites.

"To date, 34 old houses have been demolished, 17 new multi-apartment residential buildings have been constructed, and 590 owners have been relocated. Looking ahead, plans include demolishing 155 more derelict buildings to make way for 175 modern multi-apartment homes," stated Akezhanov.

Courtyards in high-rise areas are also seeing enhancements. Current repairs are wrapping up in 16 courtyards, while substantial renovations proceed in four others within the Zhuldyz-1 micro-district.

These renovations include upgrading children's and sports playgrounds, landscaping, and the installation of pergolas, gabions, benches, and bins. Asphalt surfaces are being replaced, paving stones laid, and a drainage system for rainwater established in the courtyards.

The "People's Participation Budget" program continues, empowering residents to propose their own improvement projects.

"By 2026, 24 projects will be realized under this program. This includes 11 parks and pedestrian areas, eight children's and sports playgrounds, four automatic irrigation systems, and one parking area," explained the district mayor.

Additionally, 2026 will see the beautification of the Bauman Grove. The reconstruction of Airport Lake is poised to become another significant public area. Its renovation plan includes a waterfront, bridges, observation decks, and pavilions, along with the installation of minor architectural features, walking and cycling paths, and parking facilities.

Reconstruction of the Great Almaty Canal named after Dinmukhamed Kunayev is ongoing. The canal stretches 5.5 kilometers through the Turkibiskiy district, with demolition, cleaning, and concrete works already completed along this section.

Turkibiskiy district remains one of Almaty's greenest areas, boasting a green fund of 772,700 trees. Since the start of 2026, 30,000 shrubs and 840 large-sized trees have been planted. Formative pruning has been completed on 4,740 trees.

Sanitary pruning continues across 20,000 planned trees, with successful pruning carried out on 17,900. Of 2,200 hazardous and removal-required trees, 1,760 have been cut down.

Special attention is directed towards flood prevention. As part of modernizing the drainage system, construction of 3.4 kilometers of new ditches has been finalized at three sites, with repairs on 600 meters of network underway at six more. Completion is targeted for November 2026.

"At the end of the third quarter, Turkibiskiy district shows solid growth. By year's end, key infrastructure projects will be completed, urban environment edits will proceed, social facilities construction will continue, and renovation projects will advance. The administration's work is aimed at improving residents' quality of life and pursuing comprehensive area development," emphasized Damir Akezhanov.

The renovation of housing, courtyards, green zones, and infrastructure is set to increase safety and comfort, while new public spaces are designed to offer residents more leisure and recreational opportunities.
