Astana Plans to Plant a Million Trees and Shrubs This Year

In 2023, Astana plans to plant over 1.1 million trees and shrubs. This greening initiative spans all city districts and includes new plantings along roads, in parks, squares, and public areas, according to Astana's official municipal website.

Currently, Astana boasts over 4 million green plantings, alongside approximately 14 million located within the 'Green Belt.' Each year, the city plants no fewer than a million trees, shrubs, and flowers.

By 2026, plans include planting 70,000 trees, over 600,000 decorative flowering shrubs, 40,500 hedge plants, and more than 400,000 perennial flowers.

Since the beginning of 2023, more than 700,000 green plantings have already been made, including 21,000 trees, 303,400 decorative flowering shrubs, 28,000 hedge plants, 130,700 shrubs, and 249,200 perennial flowers. The greening efforts will continue into the fall.

Special attention is given to large-sized trees and perennial shrubs, taking into account the capital's climate conditions. The species used include maple, green ash, small-leaved elm, red willow, and lilac.

Green plantings are placed not only in parks and squares but also along major city thoroughfares. New plantings are underway along the Tarlan Astana line and on Syganak and Kabanbai Batyr streets. Plans also include planting thousands of trees to form new green zones.

The greening of the second phase of the Greenline pedestrian boulevard is ongoing, creating new walking paths, green spaces, sports, and play areas. As part of the beautification, trees, shrubs, and other plants will be planted.

Along the Yesil River, a park cluster is forming, including the Presidential Park, Park of Peace and Accord, and Triathlon Park, among other recreational zones. Work also continues on greening and beautifying the Yesil embankment.

In the Yesil district, the green fund comprises about 240,000 trees, 600,000 shrubs, 65,000 square meters of flowerbeds, 5 million square meters of lawns, and over 117,000 linear meters of hedges. Over 40,000 green plantings have been made here since the start of the year.

In the Baikonyr district, more than 2,000 green plantings have been made since the start of the year. In the fall, approximately 500 more trees and shrubs will be planted on Abai Avenue and Kenen St., Pushkin St., and J. Tashenov St.

In the Sarayshyq district, 2,357 trees and 18,577 decorative flowering shrubs have been planted. Since the beginning of the year, more than 330,000 green plantings and over 1,700 trees have been planted in the Saryarka district.

Greening efforts are also underway in the Almaty district, which has over 97,700 trees and over 1.7 million square meters of lawns. In 2026, over 130,000 green plantings are planned for this district.

In the Nura district, 24,500 trees and about 277,000 decorative shrubs have been planted in recent years.

Greening of new natural territories continues. In the Malo-Taldykol area, the first phase of tree and other green planting will begin this fall.

There is ongoing maintenance for the planted vegetation, including watering, pest and disease control, fertilization, and irrigation system restoration. This approach ensures not only an increase in plantings but also their survival rate.

Thus, greening in Astana forms a unified system of green spaces, from parks and boulevards to the 'Green Belt.' This year, the city will gain over 1.1 million new green plantings.

Previously, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to continue systematic work on developing urban infrastructure, beautifying, and greening Astana. Beautification works are being conducted in all six districts of the capital. In recent years, around 500 public and courtyard spaces in Astana have been developed.
