First Gastronomy Street to Open in Almaty on City Day

On September 20, Almaty will celebrate City Day by inaugurating its first gastronomic street — Masanchi Street, running from Satpaev Avenue to Abay Avenue.

The establishment of Masanchi as a gastronomic street is part of a broader initiative to develop a network of specialized gastronomic streets in Almaty. This project is aimed at boosting the urban economy, tourism, small and medium-sized businesses, and creating modern public spaces.

The concept of gastronomic streets draws from international experiences where gastronomy, culture, entrepreneurship, and beautification create a cohesive urban environment.

Such venues support local businesses, increase the attractiveness of streets, and offer spaces for leisure and social interaction for residents.

The project entails comprehensive transformations of the areas with a unified architectural style and the development of a gastronomic infrastructure. At least 60% of the establishments are hospitality venues, while up to 40% are complementary businesses such as flower shops, craft workshops, bookstores, galleries, and other entities integral to the gastronomy street concept.

Masanchi Street will be the first completed project in this direction. Along a 413-meter stretch, a modern urban environment has been established featuring a semi-pedestrian area, widened sidewalks, greenery, bike paths, and summer terraces for eateries.

Enhancements during the beautification process included new surfacing, urban infrastructure elements, the creation of a barrier-free environment, and the installation of new lighting, benches, and waste bins. The area is further enriched with vegetation, art objects, and small architectural forms. Buildings have also been renovated from "facade to facade."

The concept for Masanchi Street envisions a youthful gastronomic street with a focus on music and urban culture. One of the thematic references includes the legendary group Dos-Mukasan, whose members were students at the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute.

The stretch features 26 establishments, 16 of which are existing and planned dining venues. Among these are restaurants like Bal, Tary, The Point, and others. Renovations are currently underway, with establishments set to open in phases upon completion.

The development of a gastronomic street network in Almaty will continue by merging hospitality venues, small and medium enterprises, and contemporary public spaces.
