Almaty to Revise Paid Parking Tariffs for the First Time in 10 Years

In Almaty, a proposal has been made to update tariffs for municipal paid parking, taking into account the transportation load in different areas of the city. This project was presented at a session of the city maslikhat and aims to increase the availability of parking spaces for residents and reduce congestion in the most in-demand sections of the urban road network.

The current paid parking tariff of 100 tenge per hour has not been revised since 2016. Over the past 10 years, the number of cars in Almaty has exceeded 1 million, which has increased the strain on roads and parking spaces.

Erzhan Dikhanbayev, the head of the Department of Traffic Management and Public Transport in Almaty, noted that the uniform tariff has ceased to fulfill its primary objective, compelling drivers to spend more time searching for free spaces and exacerbating the load on the road network.

In response, a differentiated tariff system is being proposed, which would vary depending on the transportation load and functional designation of the area. For zones with low congestion, the tariff will remain at 100 tenge per hour, for areas with medium load it will be set at 150 tenge per hour, and for the most congested zones, the rate will be 200 tenge per hour.

The existing benefits for residents are retained, allowing homeowners in paid parking zones to obtain special permits for free use of parking spaces. This also includes concessions for certain categories of users.

Project developers are confident that the changes will help manage parking space more efficiently, increase the turnover of parking spots, and create comfortable conditions for all road traffic participants.
