Kazakhstan to Draft Energy Storage Law and Green Energy Development Strategy

Kazakhstan has decided to draft a law on energy storage and a strategy for developing green energy at the 'Go Net Zero — Central Asia and Caspian' business summit held in the region. This important event highlights the prospects of reducing the carbon footprint in the energy sector, from extraction and processing to electricity generation and transmission.

At the summit, Tұrar Әlimzhan, Director of the Renewable Energy Sources Department at the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, delivered a keynote address. He emphasized that the countries of the region not only share a common history and cultural ties but are also interconnected by energy systems, water resources, and a shared responsibility for sustainable development.

The region is undergoing significant transformation. Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan are aligning efforts to develop a new energy model based on renewable sources, storage systems, and low-carbon technologies, which will form the basis of industrial sovereignty.

One of the key tasks on the regional agenda is to create a sustainable and independent energy system that considers competitiveness and control over critical infrastructure. Achieving this goal requires modernizing energy networks, implementing energy storage systems, improving regulatory mechanisms, and aligning approaches with international climate standards.

Special attention at the summit was given to the development of the green energy corridor Central Asia — Azerbaijan — Europe. This project has moved to the stage of practical implementation and is considered one of the promising directions for regional energy cooperation.

Kazakhstan is steadily increasing its capacity in renewable energy sources. According to the Plan for the Development of the Electric Power Sector until 2035, at least 8.4 GW of installed capacity from renewable energy facilities is planned.

"We are systematically moving towards this goal. The law on energy storage systems is already under consideration and is one of our strategic priorities. Simultaneously, a long-term green energy development strategy is being developed," said Tұrar Әlimzhan.

He noted that further development of low-carbon energy requires the joint efforts of the region's countries, sharing experiences, and working out coordinated approaches.
